Resolved Question: how do i get into the family businesss?

my father was an electrical engineer for many years, and then eventually, now he runs a commercial real estate business that my grandfather started in new york city. now my dad has leased a particular section of our second home's property (256 acres) to a drilling and timber company. they basically drill for natural gas/oil and then cut some trees down to distribute to timber and woodworking companies. how do i get involved in my father's business. it's really inspiring. i just turned 18 and i believe i am old enough to get my real estate license. i guess that's a start, right? more

Resolved Question: Want to get started making furniture?

I'm 16 and I'm fairly skilled at woodworking at my high school. For christmas I'm thinking of asking for a few tools to get me started in building some furniture, and possibly making a part time business out of it if I can make good enough products. What do you think the BARE ESSENTIALS are for me to get started doing this? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: I am completely at a loss on Christmas ideas...help!?

I have quite a few people I need to buy for this year, but don't really have an idea of what or where to start. If I tell you a little bit about the people, could you help me think of presents that might work? My budget is pretty open. Fiance: Already ordered him a Roku netflix player - need another idea, too. He's a complete and total movie freak. He's also really into martial arts, running, cooking, travel, and music. He already has all the clothes/shoes/accessories that he wants. He also really enjoys camping and the outdoors. He wanted a kayak, but we have no place to store that in our condo. He's a videographer by profession, so anything related to that would be good, but would also probably be more than I can afford. Any ideas? Father: No idea. Help! He's very much a guy's guy, and loves woodworking and lathe work, and motorcycles (BMW - he's not a Harley guy or a biker type - just likes to ride.) He also likes music to some degree. Fiance's mother: Again, help me. She already HAS everything she could possibly want, and has everything she could want/need to decorate her home. She runs a franchise jewelry business, and travels a LOT. She's really kind of a fun-spirited hippy chick. I like her. :-) Fiance's Father/Stepmom: This is what's particularly stumping me. They are very well traveled and affluent - it's truly a 'what to get the couple who has everything' question. They work together as a team in higher education, travel all over the world constantly, and are highly interested in diplomacy, peace in the Middle East, and humanitarianism. My sister: She is married and has 6 children. She is a nurse, and so is her husband. I'd like to get a 'family present', so I don't have to buy 8. She's into Yoga a lot lately, and loves to read. My brother: Lives in Alaska with his wife and 16 year old daughter. He's a machinist, gun enthusiast, and hunter. He also loves motorcycles, snomobiling, and paintball. Read: Redneck. I would also like to get a 'family gift' for them as well. My aunt: We are visiting her over the holidays, and I'd like to give her a 'thank you' gift for having us. She is in her late 60's, and enjoys dogs, gardening, cooking, wine, and travel.  more

Resolved Question: Can you proofread this for me?

I know I'm not the best writer out there, and on top of that, I'm human too. I make mistakes and I'm not perfect. I am probably at or less than average in writing (State of Ohio says I'm above average). My goal when I started typing this dream wasn't aimed to be "perfect", but merely just to tell the dream I had. I'm not a good story teller and never claimed to be one. My talents lie in other areas such as math, science, woodworking, business, archery, etc. Anyways, thanks for your opinions! Please don't Tell Me why I wrote this. Last time I posted this question, some guy told me why I wrote this and ......that's just stupid. Thanks for any help! more

Resolved Question: How do I help build my dad's customized countertop and cabinet business?

My dad has been in the woodworking business for over 20 years. He makes customized countertops and cabinets for businesses like restaurants and dentists' offices. He does everything by himself from the initial client/estimation, labor, to the installation...everything. He has a good reputation, and I want to build upon that. I'm looking into being a sales representative to bring him more clients. How should I go about doing that? Who should I start contacting? New business owners? Architectures? Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: Writing a resume after owning your own business?

I own my own business and after a year of toiling away and making barely any cash I desperately need to get back into the job market, my only problem is how to describe the current employment situation and how I came to that. I was laid off in January of 2006, so I wanted to start my own business in woodworking and other various things. I don't actually make anything, my fiance does. We look for places to sell them together and come up with ideas for things together and it's all in my name anyway. So...how do I word this? I don't want future employers to think that my primary concern wouldn't be their company and the job at hand. My company is very part time and are high dollar items so business is scarce. Any advice? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: What are some courses and classes to take during high school that will help me pursue a career in architecture

I am going to be a freshman next year, but am trying to get some idea about what classes I should take and when (thoughout my entire high school career). I am already planning on taking physics, introduction to drafting & woodworking (wich will lead to engineering design & computer aided design). I am going to take four years of math starting with Geometry. What other classes should I take? Should I take some art classes? What are some classes that I should consider to help me with the forms of business I will encounter during a career of architecture? I apologise if my question seems worded akwardly, or if I seem to be repeating questions: if I did it was not intentional. more

Resolved Question: How can a Deaf person get a grant to start their own business?

I used to be hearing, I was a certified sign language interpreter for 28 years, until last year when I went deaf. I can no longer interpret, obviously, and for my own financial stability, would like to start a small business utilizing my and my husband's crafts (we are both quite talented--myself with soft sculpture, sewing and quilting, he with welded art and woodworking.) I would like to know what is out there in the way of grants that would help me get started. Any suggestions? more
